Gone are the days of landing a good job, working there 30-40 years and then retiring with your gold watch. Honestly, these days you’re hard pressed to find full-time employment with decent pay and benefits. Benefits? What are those? The new norm for many employers is to hire part-time employees so that they are not obligated to pay medical benefits or offer sick, personal or vacation days with pay.
So, in essence, if one works 2 or 3 part-time jobs to earn the equivalent of one full time income, they are still left with no benefits. This is where thinking outside the box must come into play. You may ask yourself, “How can I work smarter, not harder?” The answer lies in not trading hours for dollars.
In most conventional types of businesses, if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. Surgeons earn great salaries, but when they stop performing surgeries, they stop getting paid. If you own a brick and mortar storefront in a good location, you make money, but if you don’t open your store for a week, you don’t make any money that week. That, of course, makes sense.
There is, however, an industry where you can leverage your time and efforts. It’s called network marketing. Work hard today, meaning the next 3 – 5 years building a network and then earn residual income indefinitely. True, that network may change in number from time to time, so you can tweak it as necessary to maintain the level of income you desire, but essentially the heavy lifting has already been done.
Network marketing has been given a bad rap by people who did not put the time in, do the work and truly learn the skills necessary to become a professional in the industry. No one would expect to become a doctor, lawyer, teacher, chef or stock broker without learning their trade. Yet, there are those who join a network marketing company and expect to become the top distributor in their company overnight. It doesn’t work that way.
You have to learn the skills to become any of the above mentioned professionals; however, the difference is in the payout. Network Marketing is the only industry I know of where the potential to earn a 6 or 7 figure income is not determined by how many degrees you’ve acquired or how many initials you have following your name.
The earnings potential is great, however, it’s not a get rich quick scheme and any company that promises that is not to be trusted. The business model is simple enough in concept in that rather than paying an advertising company large sums of money to advertise their products, a network marketing company distributes that money amongst its sales team of distributors as a “thank you” for providing word of mouth advertising.
You are compensated for product sales as well as building a network of distributors and teaching them to do what you do. So, no … it’s not a pyramid scheme!
Another thing to consider is that the world is changing the way it shops. We see large retailers like Sears and Kmart going out of business. According to Money.CNN.com, Sears Holdings has not turned an annual profit since 2010.
This is not surprising seeing that more consumers are shopping online and with direct sales companies. Many people are looking for a better way to spend and earn their money. According to the Direct Selling Association, “A record 20.5 million people were involved in direct selling in the United States in 2016, a 1.5% increase from the previous year.”
That tells me there must be something to this thing! Approximately one quarter of that amount (5.3 million) are building independent businesses in direct sales through a customer base and managing a team of distributors. Some are full-time, but the majority is part-time, mostly likely weaning themselves from the traditional corporate marketplace.
Another interesting fact is “Estimated direct retail sales of $35.54 billion in 2016 is the second most in direct selling history.” (www.dsa.org)
So, is there an alternative to the traditional 9-5 which is quickly becoming a thing of the past? Yes, and it’s a profession called Network Marketing.
